What short interest is — and what it isn't
- Short interest: shares sold short that are still open on the settlement date — the 15th and the last business day of each month — as brokers report them to FINRA, published seven business days later.
- Short interest as a percentage of shares: the shares sold short divided by all the shares the company has outstanding — the figure on this page. Short float divides by the shares available to trade (the float), which excludes insiders' holdings: it is higher, and estimates of the float vary.
- Days to cover (the short interest ratio): the shares sold short divided by the average daily volume, as FINRA computes it — how many days of normal trading buying them back would take.
- Not the daily short sale volume: FINRA also publishes the shares sold short each day, much of it market makers' routine trading rather than lasting bets.
- A high short interest says many investors bet on a fall, or hedge another position; it is not a forecast, and a squeeze is not a given.
