What a 13F shows — and what it doesn't
- Who files: institutional investment managers with investment discretion over at least $100 million in 13(f) securities — hedge funds, asset managers, pension funds, banks, insurers, family offices.
- What it lists: long positions at the end of the quarter in 13(f) securities — U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs, listed options, some convertible bonds — with the number of shares and their market value. Since January 2023, values are reported in dollars; before, in thousands.
- What it leaves out: short positions, cash, most bonds, stocks listed only abroad, private companies, and small positions (fewer than 10,000 shares and less than $200,000).
- Timing: a snapshot of the last day of the quarter, made public up to 45 days later. Positions may have changed since.
- Amendments: a manager can refile its whole list (a restatement) or add holdings it left out; the SEC can let a manager keep some positions confidential for a while.
